Newcomers Suriname finished the opening day of the Pan-American Korfball Championship in Cali as the shock leaders after beating both the defending champions Brazil and the hosts and the 2014 runners-up Colombia.

It left them in poll position to win one of the two places available at the International Korfball Federation (IKF) World Championship in Durban next year.

The South American nation, which used to be a constituent country of The Netherlands, has only recently seen its national governing body, known as the Surinaamse Korfbal Federatie (SKF), get revived following an initiative by former Dutch international player Gerald van Dijk.

They were accepted as the latest members of the IKF last August.

Suriname had begun their campaign at the Coliseo Mundialista, Escuela Nacional del Deporte by beating Colombia 21-5.

They then followed that up by beating Brazil 18-10.

Brazil, winners of the inaugural Pan-American Korfball Championship at home in Americana four years ago, had made a confident start when they beat old rivals Argentina 15-13.

Colombia recovered from their surprise defeat by beating Costa Rica 12-3 later in the day.

But, with Dominican Republic defeating Costa Rica 24-6 and Argentina 15-3, it leaves Brazil and Colombia both currently outside the qualifying positions for South Africa as they lay in third and fourth positions.

Suriname will be hoping to protect their position at the top of the table tomorrow when they first take on Argentina before meeting Dominican Republic in what could be a decisive clash.

The tournament is due to conclude on Sunday (March 4).
