United States to boycott IBU World Cup final in Tyumen

A statement has just arrived from US Biathlon confirming speculation that American athletes will boycott next month's IBU World Cup final in protest at the worldwide governing body's decision to keep the event in Tyumen in Russia.

At a meeting held during the Games here, the IBU decided the competition should remain in the Russian city despite the country's doping scandal.

Olympic pursuit silver medallist Sebastian Samuelsson was among those who spoke out and criticised the move from the IBU, while athletes from other countries, such as Canada, threatened not to compete.

"The IBU’s recent decision to move forward with the World Cup Final in Tyumen, Russia is completely unacceptable," the US Biathlon statement read.

"In support of clean sport and our own physical safety, we cannot in good conscience
participate.

"The message from the athletes was clear. With Russia still being out of compliance with the WADA Code, with threats of physical harm to athletes who travel to Russia, with six athletes already sanctioned by IBU and the IOC from the 2014 Olympic season and another case awaiting a decision, holding the World Cup Final in Russia now sends an outrageous message of anti-doping indifference to the world."
