Faultless performances from ten-time Olympian Ian Millar, on 15-year-old Dixson, and Rio 2016 bronze medallist Eric Lamaze, on 13-year-old Coco Bongo, ensured the Canadians finished top of the table in the American city.

Millar posted a total score of 142.31 with no faults after his two runs while Lamaze registered an overall total of 145.8, also with no faults after his two outings.

The meeting had been close at the halfway stage with Canada and Germany level on four faults apiece.

The German team, however, consisting of Andre Thieme, Christian Heineking, Markus Beerbaum and Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum, then put together some error-strewn performances, meaning they dropped away and finished fourth in the final standings.

The Canadians, who also boasted Tiffany Foster and Francois Lamontagne in their ranks, took full advantage of the situation and ended up collecting just eight faults in total to ensure they were crowned champions.

Canada's final fault total of eight is made to look even more impressive by Brazil's silver medal-winning total of 16.

Ireland finished in the bronze medal position on 24 faults.

After his team's win, Millar said: "It sure switched around, it looked one way in the first round but then it changed like crazy in the second when the Germans got into trouble and the Brazilians came steaming out."

The Beijing 2008 silver medallist also praised his fellow faultless team mate Lamaze.

"Eric and I are like the bookends - you just have to put someone in the middle and away we go and do our best to deliver," he said.

The 100 points earned by the Canadians today puts them top of the North/Central and Caribbean league rankings, a position they will be hoping to maintain at the next meeting in Coapexpan, Mexico, in April.

Their main target this season will be a qualification for the 2018 FEI Jumping Nations Cup Final, which takes place in Barcelona, Spain, in October.
