Kuala Lumpur is set to stage the 34th edition of the Asian Track Cycling Championships, with competition beginning tomorrow.

Action will take place at the Velodrom Nasional Malaysia over four days, marking the sixth time Malaysia has hosted the event.

A total of 20 gold medals will be on offer at the Championships, split evenly between men's and women's events.

The host nation are likely to have their hopes resting on Azizulhasni Awang, who won the men's sprint title at last year's Championships in India.

He later claimed gold in the men's keirin event at the Track World Championships, which took place in Hong Kong in April.

Hong Kong were the most successful nation at the Asian Track Cycling Championships last year, as they topped the medals table with six gold, three silver and four bronze.

An Opening Ceremony was held today at the venue, with the event also coinciding with the Asian Cycling Confederation Congress.

International Cycling Union President David Lappartient is set to attend the Championships from Saturday (February 17), with the event continuing until Tuesday (February 20).

The event comes swiftly after the conclusion of the Asian Road Cycling Championships, which took place in Myanmar.

United Arab Emirates' Yousif Mirza won the men's road race event, while Hong Kong's Cheung King Lok secured the individual time trial crown.

Japan won the team time trial ahead of Iran and Hong Kong.

Nguyen Thi That of Vietnam was crowned winner of the women's road race, with South Korea's Lee Ju-mi triumphing in the individual time trial.
