Rocco Cattaneo has confirmed his intention to serve as European Cycling Union (UEC) President until 2019, following their latest Management Board meeting in Valkenburg.

The Swiss official has been the acting UEC President since September following their former head David Lappartient being elected President of the International Cycling Union.

Cattaneo informed the Management Board of his decision to stand for the post full time at the Electoral Congress scheduled to take place in Istanbul on March 11.

Should be be elected, Cattaneo would serve until 2021.

The meeting also saw an agreement reached over reform of the Road European Cycling Championships, which will come into force for the 2019 edition.

The decision will see the distance of races be reduced and shorter circuits used for the competitions.

It is claimed this will make races more spectacular and exciting for the general public and media.

Time trial events will take place over a "unique circuit", with the course of 20 to 30 kilometres being used by all age groups.

The women’s elite road race will take place over a distance of either 100km to 120km and the under-23 event held on a reduced 70km to 100km course.

A 50km to 70km circuit will be used for the women’s junior event.

The men’s elite race will be held from between 150km to 180km, with the under-23 event a shorter 120km to 150km distance.

The junior race will be held over 100km to 120km.

In order to ensure the greatest visibility of sponsors, some changes to the European champion jersey were approved.

"We have come out of this Management Board meeting with numerous new innovations which are designed for all parties involved in our sport, from the athletes to the public and press as well as those who believe and invest in cycling," said Cattaneo.

"We are aware that cycling is undergoing a period of radical change and our main objective must be to reach as many fans, athletes and others that we can, also thanks to the great support of television.

"The reform of road cycling approved yesterday will revitalise our sport.

"Without affecting the appeal of the tradition of European cycling, we will make it more accessible to even more people which will be beneficial to all National Federations.

"Finally, I would like to thank all Management Board members for their significant contribution in studying and drawing up these proposals and above all for the spirit of harmony and solidarity they have shown over the last few months."

The Management Board also approved other proposals such as the plan to create a race circuit for E-bikes, both on mountain bike and road.

European Cycling’s governing body revealed this will be named UEC Formula E-Bike, with initial contacts set to be made with leading technicians and manufacturers in the assisted mobility market in order to examine the regulatory aspects shortly.
