Ylläs will host the opening round of the Ski Orienteering World Cup season, with action set to take place across three days in Finland.

Competition will begin at the ski resort tomorrow, with the men’s and women’s sprint events.

The men’s race will take place over a distance of four kilometres, with Sweden’s Erik Rost expected to be among the main contenders for victory.

His compatriot Tove Alexandersson will begin her pursuit of a second World Cup title when she contests the women’s race over a shorter three kilometre distance.

Action will continue on Tuesday (November 28) with middle-distance races providing the focus of attention.

Competition will conclude the following day when the men’s and women’s mass start races are held.

The event is the first of three World Cup rounds to take place during the season, with the second due to be held at Velingrad, in Bulgaria, during February.

Craftsbury, in the United States, will stage the final World Cup in March.

A Team World Cup title will also be awarded at the end of the three rounds, which will comprise two mixed relay sprints, as well as one men’s and a women’s relay.
