England have taken the gold medal in the seven-a-side football tournament on the final day of sporting action at the 2017 European Para Youth Games in the Italian region of Liguria.

They came out on top in the three-team tournament with a comfortable 3-0 win over Denmark.

The Danes defeated Spain 4-1 in the semi-final yesterday after England qualified automatically after winning both of their opening matches.

Bailey Fleming opened the scoring for England after nine minutes before Reece McMillan added a second on 26 minutes.

England were in complete control of the match when Jack Fox Hockney added a third on 40 minutes.

Denmark failed to cut the deficit as the English, led by head coach Paul Harrison, went on to claim gold.

Germany prevailed in the final of the goalball tournament.

They began the day with a 100 per cent record and maintained that by beating Portugal 7-2 in the final to seal the title.

More than 600 Para-athletes from 26 countries are competing in eight sports at the event in Savona and Genoa, which is due to finish tomorrow.

Athletics, boccia, seven-a-side football, goalball, judo, sailing, swimming and table tennis are the sports on the programme at the Games, organised by the European Paralympic Committees in conjunction with the Italian Paralympic Committee.

The event is the fourth edition of the European Para Youth Games.

It was first held in Brno in the Czech Republic in 2011 and 2012 before Varazdin in Croatia hosted the 2015 Games.
