Brazil will challenge Canada for a place in the 2018 World Men's Curling Championship, it has been announced.

It will be the first time Canada will face a challenge for the place, the second of two spots on offer in the Americas Zone.

Under the World Curling Federation (WCF) qualifying system, the second ranked team in the Americas Zone from the previous World Championships - provided they are not the next hosts - are subject to challenge from other countries from the region.

Due to the United States hosting the World Championships, they received the guaranteed place for the zone.

It left Canada facing the prospect of a challenge, with Brazil having opted to go head-to-head for the final spot.

They will face a difficult proposition, with Canada being the record 38-time winners of the World Championships.

Brazil, a WCF member since 1998, have previously challenged the American men in 2009, 2010, 2015 and earlier this year.

The South Americans failed to secure a victory in each of their attempts.

They will hope to spring a surprise during the best-of-five series against the reigning world champions, with their clash with Canada due to take place from January 11 to 14.

The ties are due to be held during the World Financial Group Continental Cup in the Canadian province Ontario.

Three initial matches have been scheduled for January 11 and 12, with two further contests having the potential of taking place the following day should they be required.

Since the inception of the World Curling Championships, the only two countries to represent the Americas have been Canada and the US.

The 2018 Championships are due to take place in Las Vegas from March 31 to April 8.
