Slovenia's Janja Garnbret will seek to return to business as usual this weekend at the International Federation of Sports Climbing's (IFSC) fifth lead and speed World Cup event of the season in Edinburgh.

The precociously talented 18-year-old, who was lead and combined World Cup winner, as well as lead world champion, in 2016, had her run of three World Cup victories this year ended in Arco last month by Jain Kim.

The 29-year-old South Korean - World Cup champion in 2010, 2013 and 2014 - is now second to Garnbret in the overall standings, 65 points behind on 300.

Belgium’s Anak Verhoeven, third overall on 257, will also be in Edinburgh, seven years after she took part in the IFSC Youth World Championships in the Scottish capital.

Also returning at the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena will be 2010 finalists Julia Chanourdie, Katherine Choong and Dinara Fakhritdinova.

Meanwhile France’s overall leader in the men's Lead World Cup standings, Romain Desgranges, will be after his third victory of the season.

He faces a field that includes Austria’s veteran athlete Jakob Schubert, who won in Arco.

Also in the mix will be 2010 Edinburgh finalists Marcello Bombardi - 89 points behind Desgranges in the overall standings - Stefano Ghisolfi, Masahiro Higuchi, Domen Skofic and Loic Timmermans.

The men's Speed World Cup event will see Russia’s Vladislav Deulin endeavouring to maintain his record of making the podium at every one of this season's events, with his victory in Arco restoring him to the top of the overall rankings.

His compatriot Stanislav Kokorin, third overall, will also be competing, along with fourth-placed Leonardo Gontero, another Edinburgh 2010 finalist.

Iuliia Kaplina, who heads this season’s women’s Speed World Cup lists after her win in Arco, faces strong opposition from compatriot Mariia Krasavina, Poland’s Klaudia Buczek, gold medallist at Edinburgh in 2010, and France’s Anouck Jaubert, the only other woman to have topped a World Cup podium this season.

The event takes place until Sunday (September 24) alongside the second Paraclimbing Cup of the season.

Leg amputee Urko Carmona Barandiaran of Spain topped every problem at the first Paraclimbing Cup of the season in Briancon.
