Italy’s Matteo Trentin won stage 13 of the Vuelta a España today as Great Britain’s Chris Froome retained his lead in the overall standings.

Trentin sprinted to victory with the 28-year-old completing the 198.4 kilometres journey from Coín to Tomares in 4 hours 25min 13sec.

It secured him his third stage win of the event and ensured Quick-Step Floors its fifth stage victory.

Trentin’s team-mates Yves Lampaert of Belgium and Julian Alaphilippe of France won stages two and eight respectively.

Team Sky's Gianni Moscon of Italy finished second today, while Team Sunweb's Soren Kragh Andersen of Denmark came third.

"It's amazing," Trentin, who also won stages four and 10, was quoted as saying by BBC Sport.

"I came to this race with confidence but never expected anything like this.

"For the team, the Vuelta is not finished and we are betting for more."

Froome finished seventh to retain a 59-second lead over Bahrain–Merida’s Vincenzo Nibali of Italy in the general classification.

He is bidding to become only the third man to win the Tour de France and Vuelta in the same season.

Orica-Scott’s Esteban Chaves of Colombia is just over two minutes behind Froome.

Tomorrow sees the riders undertake a 175km route from Écija to Sierra de la Pandera.

The race is scheduled to finish in Madrid on September 10.
