The United States begun their quest for a third consecutive Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) Women's World Cup crown with a convincing win over Scotland in Guildford today.

Brooke Griffin and Kelly Rabil top scored with four goals apiece as the US triumphed 19-3 in their Group A opener at the Surrey Sports Park.

Marie McCool chipped in with three goals, while Kayla Treanor and Michelle Tumolo added two each.

Alexandra Aust, Taylor Cummings, Allyson Carey and Laura Zimmerman also got their names on the scoresheet.

Victory for the US moves them to the top of Group A ahead of hosts England, 12-6 winners against Wales yesterday, and Canada, who beat Australia 9-5 today, on goal difference. 

In Group B, the team representing the Haudenosaunee Native American confederacy made a winning start by overcoming South Korea 17-5.

Joining them as the early frontrunners are Italy, who edged Hong Kong 12-10.

Czech Republic and Israel lead the way in Group C with the former thrashing China 30-1 and the latter defeating The Netherlands 17-3.

Group D action saw Japan beat Germany 10-9 prior to Latvia overcoming Spain 9-6, while Group E produced wins for Sweden, 14-2 over Colombia, and New Zealand, 10-5 at the expense of Ireland.

Action in Guildford is due to continue tomorrow.
