Mladá Boleslav, the city in the Czech Republic where Škoda was founded, has been awarded the 2021 World Orienteering Championships.

The decision was announced in Tartu in Finland following a meeting of the International Orienteering Federation (IOF) Presidents’ Conference held during the current Championships which are due to finish tomorrow. 

The Czech Republic were also awarded the 2020 World MTB (Mountain Bike) Orienteering Championships, which will take place in Jeseník.

The Czech Republic also hosted the 2008 World Orienteering Championships, when they were held in Olomouc. 

Czechoslovakia also staged the Championships in 1972 and 1991 in Staré Splavy and Mariánské Lázně respectively.

Mladá Boleslav's history dates back to the 10th century when it was founded by King Boleslav II as a royal castle.

The city is located 31 miles north east of the Czech capital Prague.

Automobile manufacturer Laurin & Klement was started there in 1895 before being re-named Škoda in 1925.

Now part of the Volkswagen group, Škoda continues to have its headquarters in Mladá Boleslav.

The 2018, 2019 and 2020 World Orienteering Championships are due to be held in Riga in Latvia, Østfold in Norway and Vejle/Kolding in Denmark respectively.

Other major events awarded by the IOF today included the 2020 Junior World Orienteering Championships to Turkey.

That year's World Masters Orienteering Championships will be staged in Slovakia.

The 2019 World Masters MTB Orienteering Championships were awarded to Germany. 

In addition, the 2018 Asian Orienteering Championships were awarded to Hong Kong and the 2019 European Youth Orienteering Championships to Belarus.
