The Zimbabwe Olympic Committee (ZOC) has taken part in the Gateway High School Careers Fair, the largest school based careers convention in the country.

It was the first time that the ZOC participated at the annual event, which is now in its sixth year.

The fair aims to help students identify available local and international career opportunities and alternatives to university education.

According to organisers the sport sector has been largely under-represented at this event in recent times and therefore invited the ZOC to take part under the theme of “Equipping students to reach their full potential”.

ZOC secretary general Anna Mguni was the guest of honour at the event and highlighted the importance of sport as a growing career option for Zimbabweans, specifically highlighting sectors outside of coaching and officiating.

In total 20 schools, mostly surrounding the capital of Harare, visited the ZOC's exhibition stand while a total of 235 flyers were distributed.

It is claimed by the ZOC that over 75 per cent of the students in attendance "knew very little of careers in sport outside of coaching, officiating, and limited options in sport medicine and many students and members of the public were amazed by the options highlighted".

The fair also provided an opportunity for the ZOC to explain its programmes and activities to the young people, many of whom could be potential Olympians in the future.

The ZOC also claimed their brand "was well received, with an increased appreciation of the existence and activity of the Olympic movement in the country".
