A 224-run partnership scored between Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah saw Bangladesh produce a shock against New Zealand in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Champions Trophy today.

The result at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff means the Asian side can still reach the competition’s semi-finals, if England defeat Australia tomorrow, while the Kiwis are out.

Al Hasan, who ended on 114, and Mahmudullah, who got 102 not out, made the highest One-Day International partnership in Bangladesh’s history to guide their side to a famous victory.

Set a target of 266, Bangladesh’s innings had an awful start as fast bowler Tim Southee rattled through the first three batsmen for just 12 runs, with star player Tamim Iqbal getting out for a duck.

When Mushfiqur Rahim was bowled by Adam Milne for 14 with the score on 33, it appeared there would not be much hope for Bangladesh.

However, this brought Al Hasan and Mahmudullah to the crease and they sparked a comeback.

By the time Al Hasan was out, his side needed just nine runs to win with 21 balls remaining and the result was merely a formality.

New Zealand struggled with the bat as they laboured their way to 265-8.

Ross Taylor top scored for the Oceanian team with 63 while captain Kane Williamson hit 57 runs.

Bangladesh’s bowlers got on top of New Zealand though, with just three boundaries coming in the last seven overs.

Mosaddek Hossain was the pick of the Bangladeshi bowlers as he claimed three wickets for 13 runs in just three overs.
