Top seed Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk of Thailand was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Thailand Open today.

Saensomboonsuk, who was a member of the Thai team which won bronze at the 2017 Sudirman Cup, was beaten in three games by compatriot Pannawit Thongnuam at the Nimibutr Stadium in the Thai capital Bangkok.

Currently ranked 71 in the world, Thongnuam claimed the opening game 21-17 before Saensomboonsuk drew level after taking the second 17-21.

But Thongnuam went on to secure his place in the final four as he took the third and decisive game 21-18.

He will now play India's Sai Praneeth Bhamidipati for a place in the final after he overcame Kantaphon Wangcharoen of Thailand 21-16, 21-17.

The other men's singles semi-final will be contested by Jonatan Christie of Indonesia and Malaysia's Joo Ven Soong.

Christie defeated France's Brice Leverdez 21-15, 21-19 while Soong recorded a 21-19, 21-11 success against Lee Cheuk Yiu of Hong Kong.

Women's singles top seed Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand safely progressed to the final four.

She defeated her compatriot and the tournament's fifth seed Nitchaon Jindapol 21-13, 21-15.

There was further success for the host nation as another Thai player advanced to the last four of the women's event.

Busanan Ongbamrungphan, seeded fourth, overcame compatriot Pattarasuda Chaiwan 21-16, 21-12.

India's Saina Nehwal also advanced after beating Haruko Suzuki of Japan 21-15, 20-22, 21-11.

Beiwen Zhang of the United States completed the semi-final line-up with a 21-18, 21-18 win over home favourite Pornpawee Chochuwong.

Further delight for the host nation arrived in the mixed doubles as their top seeded pairing progressed.

Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai produced a 21-15, 21-18 victory over the German pairing of Mark Lamsfuss and Isabel Herttrich.

Chris Langridge and Marcus Ellis, who were Rio 2016 bronze medallists in the men's doubles, made it through to the semi-finals.

The English pairing saw off Jones Ralfy Jansen and Josche Zurwonne of Germany 21-15, 13-21, 21-14.

Action is due to continue tomorrow with semi-final action.
