Colombia’s Fernando Gaviria claimed his second victory of this year's Giro d'Italia in a sprint finish, after Slovenia’s Luka Pibernik had prematurely celebrated winning stage five with six kilometres remaining.

Bahrain-Merida rider Pibernik raised his hands as he crossed the line, forgetting there was another lap to complete the 159km route from Pedara to Messina.

The 23-year-old only seemed to realise his error once the peloton had gone past him.

Quick-Step’s Gaviria, who won stage three in Sardinia on Sunday (May 7), edged out Italy's Jakub Mareczko for the win.

Ireland's Sam Bennett finished closely behind in third.

"I’m happy with these two victories," Gaviria was reported as saying by Eurosport.com.

"The legs are now responding the way we wanted.

"This victory isn’t just for me; it’s for my team and my family and everyone that supported me.

"My family is here and it’s beautiful to give them this gift.

"The whole team worked perfectly."

Gaviria’s team-mate Bob Jungels of Luxembourg is still in the overall lead, maintaining his six-second advantage over Welsh Team Sky rider Geraint Thomas.

Thomas' fellow Briton Adam Yates remains four seconds further back on the same time as defending champion and home favourite Vincenzo Nibali and 2014 winner Nairo Quintana of Colombia.

Tomorrow’s sixth stage is a 217km route from Reggio Calabria to Terme Luigiane.

The three-week race is due to conclude in Milan on May 28.

Also scheduled for tomorrow is the start of the women's road race at the International Cycling Union (UCI) Tour of California.

The race will start and finish at Heavenly Mountain Resort with the first stage in South Lake Tahoe being a 117km route.
