Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu claimed victory over Saina Nehwal in a quarter-final battle between two home players today at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) India Super Series in New Delhi.

The third seed won in two straight sets, but was pushed hard in each by her sixth seeded opponent, the bronze medal winner at London 2012.

Sindhu took the first game 21-16 before edging an even tighter second 22-20 at the Siri Fort Indoor Stadium.

She will now face South Korean's Sung Ji-hyun in tomorrow's semi-final after the second seed beat Thailand's Ratchanok Intanon by an identical 21-16, 22-20 scoreline.

Top seed and Olympic champion Carolina Marin was forced to dig deep in the other half of the draw before defeating Minatsu Mitani of Japan 21-10, 20-22, 21-14.

Another Japanese player lies in wait at the last-four stage as fourth seed Akane Yamaguchi overcame fellow countrywoman Nozomi Okuhara 21-13, 22-21, 21-18.

An all-Danish final remains a possibility in the men's singles draw.

Third seed Viktor Axelson won today's opening quarter-final 19-21, 21-14, 21-16 against Taiwan's Tzu Wei Wang after a 61 minute struggle.

He will now face Angus Ka Long Ng of Hong Kong in tomorrow's semi-final after the sixth seed won 10-21, 21-15, 21-19 against Indonesia's Tommy Sugiarto.

In the other half of the draw, Denmark's Anders Antonsen beat India's Sameer Verma, 24-22, 21-19 in 53 minutes.

Taiwan's seventh seed Chou Tien Chen lies in wait after beating another Danish player in Hans-Kristian Solberg Vittinghus, 21-10, 21-14.

All semi-final clashes are scheduled to take place tomorrow.
