Canada are the only unbeaten team left at the World Women's Curling Championship as they edged Switzerland 8-6 to record their fifth straight win in Beijing today.

The two sides both came into the round-robin clash with 100 per cent records but the Olympic gold medallists proved too strong with a hard-fought victory at the Capital Gymnasium.

After the match began in tense fashion, Canada opened up a 4-1 lead in the fourth end as skip Rachel Homan scored three points.

From that point on, a Canadian triumph never looked in doubt and they went on to wrap up a narrow success to retain top spot on the leaderboard.

"Switzerland are always a really good team, they play well and I’m sure we’ll see them again," Homan said.

"We're always working on things and learning as we go.

"It'd mean a lot to us [to go all the way and win], but we're not thinking about that.

"We're just focusing on the round-robin right now.”

Canada had earlier ousted the United States 7-5 to preserve their unbeaten record, while Switzerland had also managed to make it four wins from four as they beat Russia 12-7.

Sweden are the other team with a four win and one loss record as they overcame Germany 6-4 and Scotland 7-3.

"We all played well and we knew it was going to be tough so it was a lot of fun to win that," Swedish skip Anna Hasselborg said after the Scotland match.

"I think we have one more level to go.

"We struggled a bit with the heavy draw weight and sometimes we came up light, so there is more we have to do."

The Czech Republic emerged victorious in their first three contests but suffered two defeats today, which saw them slip down the standings.

Russia's skip Anna Sidorova cleared out a Czech stone in the third end to establish a 4-1 lead and her team then saw out a 9-7 triumph.

The Czechs were then on the wrong side of an 8-6 scoreline in their encounter with Italy.

Action at the event in the Chinese capital, the host of the 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, is due to continue tomorrow.
