Colombia's Nairo Quintana was confirmed as the winner of the Tirreno-Adriatico after the final stage of the International Cycling Union (UCI) WorldTour event, which saw Rohan Dennis triumph in the time trial.

Australia's Dennis began the day in third place in the general classification, behind Quintana and France’s Thibaut Pinot.

A flat 10 kilometre individual time trial in San Benedetto del Tronto presented Dennis with a chance to make up ground, as the BMC Racing rider is a specialist in the discipline.

He would complete the course in a time of 11min and 18sec, which proved enough to claim the stage victory.

The Netherlands' Jos Van Emden and Australia's Michael Hepburn finished their efforts three seconds off the pace of Dennis.

Dennis' display would prove enough to move up to second place in the general classification as he clawed back his deficit to Pinot.

However, he was unable to make up the full 1min 6sec gap to Quintana, with the Colombian ending 41 seconds down on the stage to secure overall victory.

Quintana ended the race with a 25 second margin of victory over Dennis, with Pinot rounding off the podium after finishing 36 seconds adrift.

"Tirreno-Adriatico is a race I like very much," said Quintana, who also triumphed at the event in 2015 and received the winner's trident.

"I'm happy to win it for the second time, and repay my team for the efforts they did for me.

"It was a fast time trial today.

"I was never worried because the seconds were in my advantage before the start."

The UCI WorldTour will continue on Saturday (March 18) with the Milan-San Remo classic.
