The National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan (AzMOK) celebrated International Women’s Day by hosting a meeting between two of the country’s Rio 2016 Olympic taekwondo players and young students.

Organised in conjunction with the Azerbaijan State Academy of Physical Culture and Sports (ADBTIA), the event was attended by women’s 49 kilograms bronze medallist Patimat Abakarova and women’s 67kg semi-finalist Farida Azizova.

The idea behind the meeting was to increase motivation among young female students through the help of successful role models, and foster their interest in sports and allow them to develop new goals.

It was held on the basis of the International Olympic Committee-developed Olympic Agenda 2020 recommendations, which include "Sport for All" and gender equality divisions, and aimed to promote Olympic values.

The athletes shared their success stories and gave detailed information regarding the challenges they have faced on the way.

Students had the opportunity to ask Abakarova and Azizova multiple questions about topics such as their diets, hobbies and training schedules.

The pair chose the best and the most interesting questions and awarded those who asked them with signed books from Rio 2016.

Following the question and answer session, Abakarova and Azizova spoke about the importance of the promotion of sport among young people and also noted the significance of establishing a stimulus in Azerbaijan.

Abakarova beat France’s Yasmina Aziez to secure one of the two women’s 49kg bronze medals at Rio 2016.

Azizova lost her women’s 67kg bronze medal match to Ivory Coast’s Ruth Gbagbi.

Azerbaijan’s sole gold medal at the Games came courtesy of Radik Isayev in the men’s over 80kg taekwondo competition.

The nation also claimed seven silver and 10 bronze medals.
