Åre in Sweden is set to host the 2017 International Ski Federation (FIS) Junior Alpine World Ski Championships, which get underway tomorrow and will run until March 14.

The event began with the Opening Ceremony yesterday while there have been two days of training in the build up to tomorrow's first day of competition.

Åre was awarded the Championships by the FIS Council at a meeting held during the 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in Vail Beaver Creek.

It followed a proposal from the Swedish Ski Association and the organisers of the 2019 Alpine World Ski Championships, which will also be held at the resort.

It is claimed the move will allow organisers to test facilities and infrastructure, as well as giving young skiers the chance to compete at a top-class venue.

The Åre Ski Area is one of Scandinavia's leading ski resorts and has been part of six unsuccessful bids for the Winter Olympics.

But it has successfully hosted the 1954 and 2007 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships and is a regular stop on the FIS World Cup circuit.

A total of 350 skiers from 50 countries are expected to compete in the Junior Alpine World Ski Championships, which has been held annually since 1982 when they were first staged in French resort Auron.

The previous edition of the Championships were held in Sochi in Russia last year.

Competition is due to begin tomorrow with the men's and women's downhill events.

Super-G action then takes centre stage on Thursday (March 9).

Women's Alpine combined is scheduled for Friday (March 10) with the men's corresponding event pencilled in for Saturday (March 11).

The women's giant slalom and team events are then due to take place on Sunday (March 12) while the men's giant slalom competition will follow a day later on March 13 alongside the women's slalom.

Action then draws to a close on March 14 with the men's slalom event.
