Hosts Russia added a further six gold medals to their tally as action concluded today at the International Military Sport Council (CISM) World Winter Games in Sochi.

The first of the home nation’s successes came in the men's ski orienteering relay as Stepan Malinobskii, Andrei Lamov and Eduard Khrennikov clocked a winning time of 1 hour 5min 52sec at the Laura Cross-Country Ski and Biathlon Centre. 

France’s Rudy Gouy, Yann Debayle and Baptiste Fuchs came second in 1:12:30, while Switzerland’s Sven Stefan Aschwanden, Tobias Michael Lutz and Andrin Kappenberger finished third in 1:14:27.

Another gold medal for Russia came in the equivalent women's event with Tatiana Oborina, Anastasia Kravchenko and Mariia Kechkina taking the win in 56:55.

The French trio of Lou Denaix, Gaelle Barlet and Elodie Bourgeois-Pin were the runners-up in 1:09:51, while Kazakhstan's Asem Nazyrova, Elmira Moldasheva and Olga Novikova completed the top three in 1:11:35.

Three of Russia’s four other triumphs came in sport climbing, with Sergei Luzhetskii claiming the men’s speed classic crown and Anna Tsyganova coming away with both the women’s speed classic and speed record titles at the Bolshoi Ice Dome. 

Luzhetskii posted a time of 31.22 in his final to finish ahead of Austria’s Jackob Schubert and fellow Russian Vadim Timonov, the respective silver and bronze medallists.

Tsyganova won the women’s speed classic final in 49.36 and was joined on the podium by runner-up Jessica Pilz of Austria and third-placed Evgeniya Lapshina of Russia.

In the women’s speed record final, she beat France’s Aurélia Sarisson and Russia’s Daria Kan to top honours with a time of 8.21.

There was also victory for Russia in the men’s 20 kilometres biathlon patrol race thanks to the efforts of Alexey Kornev, Matvey Eliseev, Sergey Klyachin and Eduard Latypov at the Laura Cross-Country Ski and Biathlon Centre. 

Their time of 52:13.1 beat that of France’s Clement Arnaud, Baptiste Jouty, Antonin Guigonnat and Damien Tarantola by 21.3 seconds, while Austria’s Klaus Leitinger, David Komatz, Peter Brunner and Kevin Plessniter were 26.7 seconds behind in third.

The women’s 15km biathlon patrol race saw France claim one of their three gold medals on the final day of action, with Coline Varcin, Estelle Mougel, Enora Latuilliere and Coraline Thomas Hugue clocking an unrivalled time of 45:23.0.

Russia’s Galina Nechkasova, Anastasia Zagoruiko, Uliana Kaisheva and Lidia Durkina came closest to matching the French quartet in 47:14.3.

China’s Wang Xue Lan, Chu Yuan Meng, Zhang Zhao Han and Chen Shuang rounded out the podium in 51:51.5.

France’s other gold medals came through Guillaume Moro in the men’s speed record sport climbing event and the duo of Letizia Roux and Adele Milloz in the women’s team ski mountaineering race at the Rosa Khutor Alpine Skiing Centre. 

Moro clocked 6.36 in his final to edge Italy’s Leonardo Gontero, who was followed in the standings by Luzhetskii.

Roux and Milloz overcame Russia’s Ekaterina Mitiaeva and Svetlana Berezan in their two-team event, registering a time of 2:28:09 to win by a margin of 25:20.

Also tasting victory today were Spain, whose men’s ski mountaineering team of Miguel Caballero Ortega and Luis Alberto Hernando Alzaga prevailed in a time of 1:56:09.

France’s Bastien Fleury and Alexis Sevennec came second in 1:56:17, while Italy’s Manfred Reichegger and Daniel Antonioli finished third in 1:57:24.

Russia ended the event top of the medal table with 22 golds, nine silvers and 11 bronzes.

Italy were second with eight golds, six silvers and six bronzes, followed by France with six golds, 12 silvers and five bronzes.
