Clemente Russo has been named as the World Series of Boxing (WSB) fighter of the week after his decisive season-opening victory for Italia Thunder.

The 34-year-old heavyweight took on the British Lionhearts' Josip-Bepo Filipi in a winners-takes-all bout in Rome, with the tie locked at 2-2.

Russo, a two-time International Boxing Association (AIBA) world champion, put in a composed display en-route to a unanimous decision victory against the Croatian.

It ensured Thunder began their season with a 3-2 victory in Group B against the Lionhearts, last season's WSB runners-up.

The heavyweight was awarded with the weekly prize after a poll among fans on Twitter.

Russo won Olympic silver medals at both the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Games in the heavyweight division.

The Condors were beaten 4-1 by Colombia Heroicos in their first clash, with the latter welcoming Venezuela to the Coliseo de combate Bernardo Caraballo in Cartagena.

On Saturday (February 18), Group C will resume with China Dragons facing Russia's Patriot Boxing Team at the Yalong Bay Conference Center in Sanya.

Astana Arlans Kazakhstan will face Uzbek Tigers at the Zhastar Sports Palace in Taldykorgan.

China beat the Tigers 3-2 in their first contest, with Kazakhstan ousting the Patriot Team by the same score.
