September 6 - London 2012 have been given official permission to stage the archery events at Lord's cricket ground for the Olympics.

Planning permission for temporary seating stands and other facilities has been given by Westminster City Council.

London 2012 chairman Sebastian Coe said: "Lord's will be a spectacular venue for hosting the Games in 2012 and the Olympic Archery will be an exciting competition for both spectators and athletes."

Lord's historic pavilion will provide the backdrop for the action with archers will shoot over the square towards the eye-catching media centre.

The archery event is provisionally scheduled to run from the opening day of the Games on July 27 until August 3 in 2012.

There will be two sessions and a total of 128 athletes will compete for four gold medals.

Keith Bradshaw, chief executive of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) who are based at Lord's, said earlier this year that he hoped two cricket tests would still be staged on the ground in 2012.

South Africa are due to tour and currently there is one test match and three one-day internationals planned for Lord's.

Archers will fire their arrows from in front of the Lord's pavilion towards the space-age media centre that is one of London's most recognisable structures.

The temporary structures include an archery range, a warm-up range, temporary seating for up to 5,000 spectators, spectator facilities and areas for athletes and officials.

There will also be a preliminary competition range on the Nursery Ground, athlete areas, operational compounds within existing buildings, and a broadcast compound, which will be located in the same area that is used during major cricket matches.

All the temporary structures will be removed after the Olympics.
