Austria’s Andreas Graf and Andreas Müller lead the Berlin Six Day Series standings after the first day of competition.

The pairing impressed in the madison chase event, which concluded today’s action in the Berlin Velodrome.

They were able to take a lap, before edging out the Netherlands’ Jens Mouris and Pim Ligthart to win the discipline.

The Austrian ended the day with 69 points and a lap advantage over the vast majority of their rivals in the German city.

Mouris and Ligthart are the only pair on the same number of laps, but are five points adrift on total of 64 overall.

The first madison chase of the day had been won by Belgium’s Kenny de Ketele and Moreno de Pauw, winners of the London and Amsterdam legs of the series.

Victory in the 40 lap derny race was given to the Dutch duo of Yoeri Havik and Wim Stroetinga, while the German duo Leif Lampater and Marcel Kalz triumphed in the team elimination competition.

Lampater and Kalz would also secure a victory in the two lap madison time trial by finishing in a time of 26.946 second, ending narrowly ahead of Tristan Marguet and Claudio Imhof of Switzerland.

The Swiss pairing would earn a win in the scratch race, which would be the penultimate race of the night.

It preceded Graf and Müller’s madison chase victory, which placed them into the overall lead.

The series intends to give six day racing a "21st Century makeover", with a television-friendly format set to feature international teams of riders across multiple events during the six days.

The top 12 male and female riders throughout the series will qualify for a one night final event, which will take place in Palma, Mallorca.

Action is set to continue tomorrow.
