The South Africa Taekwondo Federation's (SATF) national selection competition will take place on January 28.

The event to select players to represent their country will take place at the Groenkloof Campus at the University of Pretoria.

Only those with belts from red to black are eligible to compete at the competition, where selection will take place in both male and female senior and junior divisions.

Olympic weight categories will be used with all World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) rules applying at the event.

An entry fee of ZAR100 (£6/$7.30/€6.90) applies with the junior class for those between 14 and 17.

Only valid members of the SATF can compete.

South Africa did not send a taekwondo representative to the Olympic tournament in Rio de Janeiro in August and has not competed in the sport at the Games since Athens 2004.

Duncan Mahlangu contested the men's under-68 kilogram division but was beaten in the first round by Guatemala's Gabriel Sagastume.

At Sydney 2000, Donald Ravenscroft also lost at the opening stage, losing in the men's 80kg class to Alexandros Nikolaidis of Greece.
