Women’s singles top seed Sung Ji Hyun beat fellow home favourite Min Ji Lee in straight games today to reach the quarter-finals of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Korea Masters at the Seogwipo Olympic Stadium.

Sung registered a 21-15, 21-11 win and will now go on to face unseeded Chen Xiaoxin of China, a surprise 21-19, 21-7 victor over fifth seed Aya Ohori of Japan.

On what proved to be a successful day for the top seeds in each of the five competitions, South Korea’s Son Wan Ho booked his place in the last eight of the men’s singles thanks to a 21-11, 21-11 victory over compatriot Moon Jun Kim.

Next up for him is a meeting with Chinese Taipei's Hsueh Hsuan Yi, who defeated South Korea's Kwang Hee Heo 21-17, 20-22, 21-19.

In the men’s doubles, Chinese Taipei’s Yang Lee and Jhe-Huei Lee kept themselves on course for the title by coming from behind to beat South Korea’s Ji Soo Lim and Hui Tae Kim 11-21, 21-13, 21-12.

South Korea’s Jung Kyung Eun and Shin Seung Chan continued to show why they are the highest-ranked women’s doubles pairing with a 21-13, 21-17 victory at the expense of Japan’s Chiharu Shida and Nami Matsuyama.

The number one seeds in mixed doubles, Ko Sung Hyun and Kim Ha Na, also progressed today by overcoming fellow South Koreans Jae Hwan Kim and Kim So Yeong 21-9, 19-21, 21-16.

The majority of today’s surprise results came in the women’s singles as two other seeded players joined Ohori in falling at the hands of unseeded opponents.

Third ranked Yui Hashimoto of Japan lost 21-18, 16-21, 12-21 to South Korea’s Ga Eun Kim, while South Korea’s Joo I Jun beat seventh-seeded compatriot Kim Hyo Min 21-18, 21-18.

The most notable casualty of all came in the men’s doubles as second seeds Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Kittinupong Kedren of Thailand lost 10-21, 19-21 to South Korea’s Ko and Kim.

Action at the BWF Masters, a Grand Prix Gold level event, is due to continue tomorrow.
