Olympic bronze medallist Mima Ito spearheaded Japan to the girls' team crown before their men's side followed suit to round off a dominant day of finals for the Asian nation at the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) World Junior Championships in Cape Town.

Ito, 16, won two matches as the Japanese team overcame China 3-1 in the girls' final before the boys' eased to a 3-0 triumph against South Korea at the GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World venue.

Japan began slowly in the girls' gold medal contest as Shi Xunyao edged China 1-0 ahead by beating 2016 Women's World Cup winner Miu Hirano 7-11, 11-7, 8-11, 11-7, 7-11.

Ito then restored parity for her country, recording a hard-fought 11-8, 1-11, 9-11, 11-7, 11-8 success in her clash with Liu Weishan.

The turning point of the tie came when Hina Hayata defeated Sun Yizhen in four games, 11-9, 11-3, 6-11, 11-6, to move Japan to the brink of victory.

It was left to Ito, a seasoned player on the senior women's circuit, to seal the title and she did so in style, claiming a 13-11, 11-7, 11-7 win to wrap up Japan's second girls' team gold medal.

"I feel great claiming the gold medal," Ito said.

"In the fourth game, I noticed that my opponent was playing with a lot of power and I had to find a way to stop her in order for us to win.

"I will also try my best again to win the title in the singles and doubles events in this competition."

Following the girls' triumph, the Japanese boys' also lived up to their top seed billing as they emerged victorious in all three matches in their final tie with South Korea.

Yuto Kizukuri got the first point on the board for Japan with a 11-5, 11-7, 9-11 success against Cho Seung-min before Tomokazu Harimoto doubled their advantage by beating An Jae-hyun 11-4, 5-11, 11-8, 12-10.

Victory for the formidable Japanese was then assured when Yuki Matsuyama swept aside Kim Dae-woo 12-10, 11-6, 11-8.

Hong Kong and the Czech Republic earned bronze medals in the girls' event, while Chinese Taipei and China both finished third in the boys' tournament.
