More than 150,000 applications have reportedly been made for volunteering roles at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup and 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The campaign to recruit volunteers was launched in June by Russian President Vladimir Putin and FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Before the application deadline passes at the end of the year, Russia 2018 have hailed the interest generated with 150,672 concrete applications claimed to have been lodged to date.

"It is an amazing figure and tells you about the huge significance of the Confederations Cup and World Cup for everyone who wants to host these tournaments at a high level," said Vitaly Mutko, Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Russia 2018 head.

"This doesn't just involve Russian citizens, but all those who wish to come here in 2017 and 2018 as well.

"It's great to see such enthusiasm and realise that so many enterprising, ambitious and determined people want to help organise the Confederations Cup and 2018 World Cup.
