Olympic bronze medallist Yu Song will be hoping to deliver the success the expectant home crowd will demand during the International Judo Federation (IJF) Qingdao Grand Prix, due to begin tomorrow. 

The event at the Qingdao Guoxin Stadium marks the final time the IJF World Tour competition will be held in the Chinese city as it is moving to Hohhot, the capital of Inner Mongolia in North China.

It is also the penultimate tournament of the season, with the last event of the campaign scheduled to take place in 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games host city Tokyo from December 2 to 4.

A total of 155 judoka from 15 nations are set to compete at the event in Qingdao, where Yu, winner of a bronze in the over 78 kilogram competition at Rio 2016, is one of the headline names due to take to the mat.

It will be her first appearance at a major event since the Olympics and she is the top seed in her category.

World Judo Masters silver medallist and team-mate Ma Sisi will be one of the athletes hoping to spoil the homecoming party for Yu, with Zagreb Grand Prix bronze medallist Sandra Jablonskyte also likely to be in contention.

World Judo Masters bronze medallist Yang Junxia is another Chinese judoka who will be bidding for a gold medal at the event as she is the top seed in the under 63kg weight class.

She comes into the competition as the favourite having finished seventh at Rio 2016.

Ulaanbaatar Grand Prix winner Sai Yinjirigala, who competes at under 73kg, is also on the Chinese team for the competition in Qingdao.

The Rio 2016 Olympian headlines a category which features two-time Grand Prix bronze medallist home favourite Sun Shuai and Uali Kurzhev of Russia.

Dagvasuren Nyamsuren of Mongolia will be aiming to continue the best year of his career to date when he participates in the under 81kg category.

Nyamsuren reigned supreme at the Asian Championships and secured the bronze medal at the Almaty Grand Prix.

Competition is due to begin tomorrow with action in the women’s under 48kg, under 52kg and under 57kg weight divisions, as well as at men’s under 60kg and under 66kg.
