Masaki Yoshida was among five Japanese winners in men's singles qualifying at the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Swedish Open began at Eriksdalshallen in Stockholm.

It comes as the Asian nation seeks to emulate the gold medal won by Kenta Matsudaira at Austrian Open earlier this month.

Yoshida was pegged back in the second set against Sweden's Jonas Stener before triumphing 4-1.

Mizuki Oikawa was also pushed to five sets before overcoming England's Tom Jarvis, 4-1.

Jin Ueda won 4-0 over Poh Shao Feng Ethan of Singapore.

Jin Takuya and Kenta Tazoe also registered respective straight sets victories over Dang Qiu of Germany and Scotland's Christopher Wheeler.

But there was disappointment for the other Japanese contestant taking part in the round as Masaki Takami lost out to home player Jens Lundqvist in a seven game thriller, 4-3.

There was also a shock defeat for South Korea's Kim Minhyeok as the world number 128 lost 4-3 645th ranked Swede Per Sandström.

"I guess this is my best match ever," Sandström said.

"It is for sure the highest ranked player that I have beaten.

"I have felt this good sometimes before when playing but not against such a good player as Kim Minhyeok."

Lin Chia-hsuan of Chinese Taipei was also pushed to seven sets before beating Sarah De Nutte of Luxembourg, 4-3.

Lin fell 1-3 behind before battling back to 3-3 before edging-ahead 13-11 in the fifth.

Lee I-Chen ensured more success for Chinese Taipei by beating Chile’s Paulina Vega 4-0 but team-mate Wang Yi-Ju lost out to Czech competitor Hana Matelova in another seven set clash.

The seeded players are due to enter the tournament tomorrow.
