Sharni Layton has been named as captain of the Australia netball team for their trip to South Africa and England for the 2017 Netball Quad Series in January and February.

Layton will lead the team throughout the series, which sees the Diamonds play in South African city Durban and English capital London.

They will be defending their title against the two hosts as well as New Zealand.

The leadership group also includes experienced shooter Caitlin Thwaites, who is installed as vice-captain for the tour with Kim Ravaillion also promoted.

Two debutantes will be given their opportunity during the series, with young defender Courtney Bruce named in the Australian squad for the first time, while Caitlyn Nevins has also been called into the team for her maiden tour.

"Selection was based on performances throughout the year, including at squad camps," said Australia coach Lisa Alexander.

"Our athletes have done their preparation work and we are confident in the strength and combinations within this team.

"Courtney put in very strong performances for West Coast Fever this year, and it was unfortunate that an injury kept her off the court in the latter part of the season.

"We have also been impressed with Caitlyn’s consistent performances and determination and her ability against the New Zealand style of play."

Veteran shooter Susan Pettitt, who has 54 test caps after making her Australian debut in 2006, returns to the team for the first time since 2013.

The team boasts a mixture of experienced and youthful players who will all be under consideration for selection ahead of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games and Netball World Cup in Liverpool in 2019.

The Quad Series starts in Durban on January 28.

It then moves to England in early February, with matches scheduled in both Liverpool and London.
