Spain beat defending champions Egypt to reach the final of the women’s team kumite competition on another busy day of action here at the 2016 Karate World Championships.

The quartet of Cristina Ferrer García, Laura Palacio Gonzalez, Rocío Sánchez Estepa and Cristina Vizcaíno claimed a 2-1 semi-final win over an Egyptian side that included superstar Giana Lotfy.

It came after they had beaten Russia, Azerbaijan and Italy earlier in the day and set up a gold medal match with France, who defeated Ecuador 2-0 in the other semi-final, on Sunday (October 30).

Alexandra Recchia and Lucie Ignace, who reached the respective women’s under 50 kilograms and under 61kg individual kumite finals yesterday, were joined on the French team by Alizée Agier and Leïla Heurtault.

Victory ensures a fifth final for France at these World Championships, following the performances of Recchia and Ignace and those of Emilie Thouy in the women’s under 55kg individual kumite and the men’s kata team.

In the men’s team kumite competition, under 84kg individual finalist Ryutaro Araga led Japan to the gold medal match.

The Asian nation, who will also be contesting the men’s and women’s team kata finals, defeated 2014 world silver medallists Germany 3-0 in the semi-finals.

Their team also featured Rikiya Iimura, Masaya Ishizuka, Hideyoshi Kagawa, Ken Nishimura, Hiroto Shinohara and Daisuke Watanabe.

Awaiting Japan in the final are reigning champions Iran, who beat France 3-0 in the other last-four encounter.

With men’s over 84kg individual kumite finalist Sajad Ganjzadeh as the main representative, the Iranian line-up also included Saeid Ahmadikaryani, Bahman Asgari Ghoncheh, Ali Fadakar, Mahdi Khodabakhshi, Zabiollah Poorshab and Ima Sanchooli.

Such was their supremacy, they did not concede a single point in their four bouts today.

The Netherlands, Azerbaijan and Switzerland, like France, all lost without reply.
