Germany's Michael Jung has reinforced his position as leader of the Les 4 Etoiles de Pau competition after another day of impressive performances in the opening event of the 2016-17 International Equestrian Federation (FEI) Classics.

Overnight Jung sat in both first and fourth position in the overall standings after yesterday's dressage competition, and he occupied the same places, despite the horses swapping positions, in the standings at today's conclusion.

After riding his 2015 European champion Fischer Takinou to first place yesterday, Jung fell back to fifth with the same horse after a score of 8.8 penalties in today's cross-country event which gave him a combined score of 48.1.

Jung's other horse, Fischer Rocana FST, who is a dual Kentucky event winner, managed to rise to top spot after a stunning performance of only 0.4 penalties to give him a total of 44.2 from the first two events.

France’s Maxime Livio thrilled his home crowd by finishing exactly on the optimum time of 11 minutes to rise to second place in the overall table on 45.3 aboard Qalao des Mers.

Nicola Wilson of Great Britain on One Two Many and New Zealand's Jock Paget on Clifton Signature both rode impressive rounds and find themselves in third and fourth places on 46.4 and 48 respectively.

They will be looking to put pressure on Jung in tomorrow’s final jumping phase.

Boyd Martin of the United States on Cracker Jack and last year’s winner, Olympic gold and silver medallist Astier Nicolas of France, rose to sixth and seventh places respectively with two time penalties apiece.

Tina Cook of Britain showed all her class aboard her Olympic reserve, Billy The Red, to rise five spots to eighth.

Cook's compatriot, Alexander Bragg, had a great round on the Dutch horse Zagreb to rise into ninth place, 0.2 penalties ahead of Australian Olympian Sonja Johnson, a sheep farmer from Perth, who has climbed into the top 10 on thoroughbred Parkiarrup Illicit Liais.

The event reaches its climax tomorrow and Jung, the Rio 2016 Olympic champion, will be attempting to finally win one of the very few events that currently eludes him.
