The Israeli team defeated Great Britain at MCU Park in Brooklyn in New York City to secure their place at next year’s World Baseball Classic (WBC).

Four years ago Israel were cruelly denied a space at the tournament following a last innings defeat to Spain in their qualification final, a match which has been "gnawing on us for years" according to coach Jerry Weinstein.

They easily overcame Britain 9-1 at the home of the New York Mets' Class A affiliate Brooklyn Cyclones on Coney Island.

Israel dominated the match, scoring a pair of fifth-inning, two-run shots through centre fielder Blake Gailen and catcher Ryan Lavarnway, who played in Major League Baseball for five years with the Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles and Atlanta Braves.

They then added another one in both the sixth and seventh innings before cementing their victory with a further three in the eighth where Britain also managed to post their first score.

Israel won all of their games in Brooklyn, dispatching Great Britain twice, as well as Brazil.

Throughout the competition, Israel’s pitchers conceded just three runs in as many matches providing the solid foundation needed to win a tournament of this kind.

"It was definitely our foal to win this qualifier and get to the main event, if that is what you want to call it." said Israel’s Jason Marquis.

Israel are now due play in Pool B of the WBC in South Korea's capital Seoul next year, against the hosts, The Netherlands and Chinese Taipei.

In February, Australia won a qualifying tournament in Sydney to reach the WBC.

Defending champions Dominican Republic and the 2013 runners-up Puerto Rico will also be competing.

Also qualified are Japan, China, Italy, Cuba, United States, Venezuela and Canada.

Japan, Mexico and the US will also host pools, as well as South Korea.

The tournament is due to take place between March 7 and 22, with the final due to take place at Los Angeles Dodgers Stadium.
