Adrien Niyonshuti has been chosen to carry Rwanda's flag at the Opening Ceremony of next month's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, it has been announced.

The 29-year-old cyclist will have the honour for the second time in his career, having also carried the flag at London 2012.

Niyonshuti is a survivor of the genocide in Rwanda, which claimed the lives of around 800,000 people, including six of his brothers.

At London 2012 he participated in the men’s cross country mountain bike competition, finishing 39th.

Niyonshuti, who rides for the South Africa registered International Cycling Union WorldTour team Dimension Data, is due to compete in the men’s road race at Rio 2016

Rwanda, though, are also sending veteran Nathan Byukusenge, with the 36-year-old competing in the cross-country race.

As well as his achievements on the road, including three national road race titles, Niyonshuti has also put his name to the The Adrien Niyonshuti Cycling Academy.

Set up after his appearance at London 2012, the Academy is aimed at helping to develop young and talented riders in the country.
