Qualifying got underway today at the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Gstaad World Tour Major Series ahead of the draw for the Rio 2016 Olympic beach volleyball tournaments, which will take place on Saturday (July 9).

Teams are preparing to discover their respective groups at the Games, which will be unveiled at the stadium court in Gstaad, a small village located in the Swiss Alps.

To reach the Games, teams must have participated in a minimum of 12 official Olympic Qualification tournaments from January 1 last year.

The final qualifying event via this route came to an end on June 12, with eligible tournaments include the World Championships, Beach Volleyball World Tour events and recognised Continental Tour Finals.

The winners and runners-up of the Beach Volleyball World Continental Cup in Sochi, which is set to get underway tomorrow, are will also receive berths at the Games as well as the five winners of the Continental Cups.

A total of 66 men’s teams from 24 countries are set to compete at the Gstaad World Tour event, while 45 women’s teams from 20 nations are also set to vie for victory.

Dutch teenagers Nika Daalderop and Joy Stubbe provided the highlight of the women’s qualification, with the duo combining effectively to earn an 18-21, 26-24, 15-12 win over Fernanda and Josemari Alves.

The result saw the pair, who are believed to be the youngest to play together at an FIVB World Tour event, secure a place in the main draw.

Slovakia’s Natalia Dubovcova and Nina Herelova were also triumphant as they upset the fifth seeded Rimke Braakman and Jolien Sinnema of the Netherlands 13-21, 21-15, 15-13, which saw them celebrate Dubovcova’s birthday in style.

The men’s qualifying event is set to continue tomorrow, but Austria’s Felix Koraimann and Daniel Mullner made a strong start by overcoming their compatriots Julian Horl and Daniel Hupfer 21-18, 15-21, 15-8.

America’s Ryan Doherty and John Mayer were also successfully against their countryman, with the duo winning 21-15, 21-17 against Taylor and Trevor Crabb.
