Canada made an impressive start to their 2016 Women’s Rugby Super Series campaign by thrashing world champions England 52-17 on the opening day of action in Salt Lake City.

The victory marks only the third time in 24 meetings that Canada have defeated England, who they lost against in the 2014 Women’s Rugby World Cup final.

Canada dominated the match throughout, scoring seven tries to England’s three at the Regional Athletic Complex.

Julianne Zussman notched two tries, while Mary-Jane Kirby, Emily Belchos, Chelsea Guthrie, Barbara Mervin and Katie McNally scored one each.

England found themselves 39-0 behind at half-time following five unanswered tries from their opponents, but they managed to bring some respectability to the scoreline with Katie Wilson, Millie Wood and Bianca Blackburn all going over.

Next up for Canada is a meeting with the United States, who lost 19-13 against France today.

England will look to bounce back from their heavy defeat when they face France.

Both matches are due to take place on Tuesday (July 5).
