Japan's Shingo Kunieda and France's Stéphane Houdet are set to renew their men's singles rivalry following the confirmation of wheelchair tennis entries for this year's Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

A total of 52 players will feature in the men’s singles, 32 in the women’s singles and 16 in the quads event.

Houdet lost to Kunieda in the men's singles final at London 2012, with the Japanese star seeking a third successive gold at Rio 2016 having also claimed victory at Beijing 2008.

The Frenchman, though, is now ranked world number one and will start as the favourite for gold.

Argentina's Roland Garros champion Gustavo Fernandez and Britain's Australian Open winner Gordon Reid will be other leading contenders in what should be a fascinating contest.

A new women's singles winner is guaranteed following the retirement of Dutch star Esther Vergeer.

The Netherlands will still be favourite for gold, however, with world number one Jiske Griffioen and Roland Garros champion Marjolein Buis each leading contenders.

An international challenge should be led by Britain's US Open champion Jordanne Whiley.

Australia’s world number one Dylan Alcott heads the entries in the quads’ singles event.

United States will lead the opposition with a strong team headed by three-time Paralympic medallist David Wagner and London 2012 bronze medallist Nick Taylor.

“Following the most successful Paralympic tennis event in history at London 2012, I am confident that this year’s event will be an equally memorable competition,” said International Tennis Federation President David Haggerty.

“Wheelchair tennis has become one of the most popular Paralympic sports thanks to its outstanding athletes and great personalities, and we are looking forward to a great atmosphere and some fierce competition.”

Doubles teams are due to be confirmed next month, including players that are already contesting in the singles events.
