Britain’s Mallory Franklin earned women’s C1 gold at the International Canoe Federation (ICF) Canoe Slalom World Cup in Pau after video judges gave her Australian rival Jessica Fox a crucial penalty.

Fox, the reigning world champion in the event, had completed the course in a time of 1min 57.18sec but had picked up four penalties for touching gates on route.

On closer inspection, the video judges deemed she had touched another gate to add another two penalty seconds onto the Australian’s finishing time, which then stood at 2:03.18.

While she was slower on the course, Franklin produced a cleaner run in the final to end with just two penalties to claim victory in a time of 2:02.17.

The podium places were completed by Spain’s Nuria Vilarrubla, who won last weekend on her home course in La Seu d'Urgell, after she finished in 2:05.44.

While Vilarrubla was unable to claim victory two weeks in a row, Slovakia’s Alexander Slafkovsky was able to achieve the feat in the men’s C1 event after powering around the course.

Slafkovsky picked up no penalties en-route to claiming the win in a time of 1:40.43, although France’s Nicolas Peschier nearly surpassed him with the final run.

Peschier clipped the fourth gate to receive a two second penalty, which ultimately saw him settle for the silver medal by finishing in 1:41.95.

Japan’s Takuya Haneda secured the bronze medal after achieving a time of 1:42.37, having completed a clean run.

The host nation were forced to settle for silver and bronze in the men’s K1 competition after Spain’s Samuel Hernanz achieved a time of 1:33.54.

Mathieu Biazizzo and Sebastien Combot finished in 1:33.71 and 1:34.26 respectively as the French kayakers completed the podium spots behind Hernanz.
