Russian sensation Yana Kudryavtseva will bid to continue her dominance in the build-up to Rio 2016 when she takes to the mat at the European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships, which begin in Holon in Israel tomorrow.

The 18-year-old already has 13 World Championship gold medals to her name and will aim to defend her European all-around crown during the event, which concludes on Sunday (June 19).

Kudryavtseva, who won four golds at the Baku 2015 European Games and is set to make her maiden Olympic appearance in Rio, is the current all-around world champion and is unquestionably the star of the rhythmic discipline.

The Russian will take some beating if she is to relinquish her grip on her European all-around crown, though she will face some stern competition over the course of the three-day Championships.

Team-mate Margarita Mamun, a winner of seven World Championship golds, will come into the European Championships as the favourite in the hoop discipline having won the event at the last edition of the competition in Minsk last year.

Russia are the leading contenders for the team prize, with both Kudryavtseva and Mamun expected to feature.

Melitina Staniouta of Belarus will be hoping to add a first-ever European title to her collection as she has managed five silvers and five bronzes since 2011, while Ukraine’s Ganna Rizatdinova, the 2013 hoop world champion, will also be one to look out for.

“This is the largest Championship ever to take place,” Ophir Pines-Paz, chairman of the Israel Gymnastics Federation, said.

“We have invested a great deal in order to host the Championship here in Holon and I am confident it will be an incredible one.”

Motti Sasson, the Mayor of Holon, added: “There were some who doubted our ability to accomplish this mission, but today I can say with absolute certainty that we have indeed succeeded.

“We are sure to have an outstanding Championship and those who have questioned our keen investment in Rhythmic Gymnastics will cease to do so."

The event starts with the senior groups all-around final.
