A superb comeback from New Zealand was not enough as they missed out on the semi-finals for the first time ever at the World Rugby Under-20 Championships in Manchester today.

New Zealand, who suffered a shock defeat to Ireland earlier in the tournament, needed to beat Wales in their final Pool A match today and hope other results also went their way.

With moments left, the Welsh were heading for victory only for the All Blacks to produce a trademark New Zealand rugby comeback.

With a shot to nothing as advantage was being played, Jordie Barrett put up a cross-field kick with Shaun Stevenson challenging Tom Williams to take it.

Williams was ruled to have knocked it into touch deliberately, earning him a yellow card and Barrett a penalty to win the match.

Barrett, the younger brother of RWC 2015 winner Beauden, held his nerve to break Welsh hearts in an 18-17 victory.

Ireland beat Georgia 35-7, however, to win the group.

England finished top of Pool B with a 17-13 win over Australia.

But South Africa earned a 40-31 victory over France this evening to finish second in Pool C behind unbeaten Argentina.

Their points haul of 11 was one better than New Zealand's, meaning they will face England in the semi-final.

Argentina will lock horns with Ireland in the other.
