Eduardo Vargas and Alexis Sanchez both scored twice as Chile fought back to claim a 4-2 victory over Panama at the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Copa América Centenario.

Having surprisingly fallen behind early on following a mistake from goalkeeper Claudio Bravo, the Chileans recovered to earn a win which secured second place in Group D.

The defending champions will clash with Mexico, who finished at the summit of Group C, in the last eight.

In the other match to take place today, Argentina, who had already qualified for the quarter-finals, ensured they ended the group phase of the special edition of the tournament with a 100 per cent record as they comfortably beat Bolivia 3-0 at the CenturyLink Field in Seattle.

Chile got off to a disastrous start in their encounter with Panama when Miguel Camargo’s 30-yard strike somehow found a way past Bravo five minutes into the contest.

His team-mates managed to spare his blushes by equalising shortly after as Vargas followed up Sanchez’s effort, which had been well saved by Panama goalkeeper Jaime Penedo.

Chile then turned the encounter on its head just two minutes before half-time as Vargas was on hand to divert Jean Beausejour’s pinpoint cross into the corner of the net.

Not long after half time, Vargas turned provider as he picked out Sanchez, who found the roof of the net with a superbly-struck volley to give Chile a two-goal advantage.

Panama were able to pull a goal back 15 minutes from time with Bravo again at fault, this time clawing Abdiel Arroyo’s header over the line to set up a tense finale for his side.

Fortunately for Bravo, Sanchez bailed him out with his second of the match in the dying stages with a well-directed header to wrap up victory.

Argentina, runners-up to Chile at last year’s Copa América, dominated proceedings from start to finish in their match with Bolivia and took the lead 13 minutes in thanks to Erik Lamela’s deflected free-kick.

Ezequiel Lavezzi doubled Argentina’s advantage barely 120 seconds later before Victor Cuesta added a third before half-time.

Argentina’s next opponents will be Venezuela, while the other quarter-final matches see hosts the United States face Ecuador and Peru entertain Colombia.
