Indian-based motorcycle and scooter manufacturer Hero MotoCorp have been named as the title sponsor for the upcoming men’s International Hockey Federation (FIH) Champions Trophy.

The tournament, due to begin on Friday (June 10) and conclude on June 17 at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London, will be known as the “Hero Hockey Champions Trophy 2016”.

The company, which sponsored the men’s Hockey World League (HWL) Final in Raipur in November and December, will also be a lead partner of the women’s event, scheduled to take place from June 18 to 26 at the London 2012 venue.

The Hockey Champions Trophy, which brings together the best of the best in international hockey, will be axed in 2019 as part of a FIH competition calendar reshuffle.

Hockey’s flailing HWL tournament has also been scrapped under the restructure, amid an attempt from the FIH to revamp the sport after it almost lost its Olympic place back in 2013, eventually surviving despite being in the bottom three along with wrestling and modern pentathlon, and forms part of the 10-year Hockey Revolution strategic plan.

“We are delighted to continue our long-standing, positive relationship with Hero,” FIH President Leandro Negre said.

“As one of the world’s leading brands, partnering with one of India’s most successful businesses once again is great for our sport.

“We will be doing all that we can to ensure their investment continues to develop the sport of hockey globally.”

The men’s competition, due to feature Olympic champions Germany and World Cup and Hockey World League winners Australia, hosts Britain, South Korea, Belgium and India, was originally scheduled to be held in Argentina.

It was moved to England in March after a contract with the Confederación Argentina de Hockey was cancelled because they could not meet obligations in regards to television rights, sponsorship and the hosting of events.

“Hockey continues to be among the most popular sports in various parts of the world, and Hero has been a constant partner of FIH in hosting marquee hockey events across the globe,” Pawan Munjal, Hero MotoCorp’s chairman, managing director and chief executive said.

“Our title sponsorship of the Hero Hockey Champions Trophy 2016 is also in keeping with the increasing global footprint of brand Hero, which is now present in 30 countries across Asia, Africa and South and Central America.”
