They then saw off Ireland 26-0 before a showdown with England - who had also beaten the Japanese and the Irish.

Bianca Farella scored the only try - and points - of the game as Canada secured a 5-0 success to reach the quarter-finals in high spirits.

Overall leaders Australia also went through the day unbeaten in Pool A, opening with a 12-7 success over France.

This was backed-up by a 28-7 dispatch of Brazil and a 21-7 triumph over Russia.

Emilee Cherry scored three tries against the Russians as the Australians, the Atlanta champions, went relatively untroubled.

Pool B was topped by reigning champions New Zealand who eased past Fiji 26-5 in their first contest.

They then had too much for Spain, 31-7, and United States who they saw off 19-7.

Tomorrow will see the quarter-finals contested with the top two from each pool and the best two third placed sides all going through.

Australia will meet Spain in the first clash after they crept through in third from Pool B on points difference ahead of Fiji.

Canada are set to meet France - second in Pool A - while England will meet the US, second in Pool B.

New Zealand have booked a meeting with Russia who went through in third from Pool A.
