France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga advanced to the semi-finals of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters after coming from behind to surprise Switzerland’s Roger Federer on Court Ranier III at the Monte Carlo Country Club today.

Federer was hoping to continue his strong comeback following knee surgery after the Australian Open in January and the world number three broke three times to win the opening set of the match 6-3.

The momentum shifted significantly at the start of the second when Tsonga broke in the first game on route to establishing a 4-1 advantage.

Federer achieved a break but the French favourite immediately hit back again to win the second set 6-2 to force a decider.

The 30-year-old held his nerve in a closely fought finale to wrap up a 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 win to reach the semi-finals.

Tsonga will meet fellow Frenchman Gael Monfils, who defeated Spain's Marcel Granollers 6-2, 6-4 in his quarter-final match.

Britain’s Andy Murray produced his best display of the competition to convincingly defeat Canada’s Milos Raonic.

The world number two cruised to the opening set 6-2 and continued to dominate the contest to win the second 6-0.

He will now face the challenge of Spain’s Rafael Nadal, who recorded a 6-1, 6-4 win over Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka.

Nadal will be hoping to win the clay court tournament, an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event, for the first time since 2012.

The Spaniard had won the event for eight consecutive years, but saw his run ended by Novak Djokovic after losing the 2013 final to the Serbian.
