Fukuoka in Japan has been awarded the 2021 International Swimming Federation (FINA) World Aquatics Championships, it has been revealed here today, while Doha will host the event in 2023.

The announcements were made by FINA President Julio Maglione following a Bureau meeting this morning, with delegations from both winning bids celebrating wildly at the front of the ceremony.

Fukuoka, Japan's sixth largest city, also hosted the 2001 edition, while Qatari capital Doha played host to the 2014 World Short-Course Championships.

"We received three extraordinary presentations," Maglione said.

"I want to express our gratitude to all."

Nanjing in China, host of the 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games, was the only other candidate, and a proposal was made for it to be awarded the 2025 edition today as well.

This did not ultimately take place, however, in the interests of transparency, due to no other bidder having had the opportunity to present their case.

Maglione told insidethegames afterwards that China remains in poll position and could be awarded the event at meetings later this year, possibly during the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

However, insidethegames has also learned that other cities, including Astana in Kazakhstan, are considering entering the race.

The result is a major boost for Asia, particularly considering Gwangju in South Korea will host the 2019 event.

This means at least three consecutive editions will be held on the world's largest continent.

Neither Fukuoka nor Nanjing's presentations received any question from the Bureau members, insidethegames was told.

"We had a great experience in 2001, and after the staging of the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, we will have an additional opportunity to develop this successful tradition," said Fukuoka Mayor and bid leader Soichiro Takashima afterwards.

Several concerns were raised in relation to Doha's bid, including regarding transportation and visas following problems during the Short-Course Championships.

No firm date for the event has been decided, although Qatari officials said they were happy to host the Championships in April, August, November or any other suitable timeframe.

A summer-date would present challenges regarding searing summer temperatures, particularly for the high diving and open water events.

One possible solution, which was mentioned in the meeting, could involve an indoor high diving event, although an April or November timeframe appears an easier and more likely solution.

It is yet another major sporting event to come to Qatar, the Gulf nation which is hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

This comes as concerns grow over possible corruption, including the reported handing out of "brown envelopes" by Qatari officials, when bidding for the 2017 World Athletics Championships, awarded to London, and the 2019 edition they subsequently won.

“The FINA Family has been many times in Doha and everyone knows our true passion for organising top-events," said Doha bid leader and Qatar Olympic Committee secretary general Thani Al Kuwari.

"Sport is an important tool for the development of our youth and of our country.

"Hosting the FINA World Championships for the first time in Middle East will be a great way to develop aquatics on a global scale."
