The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has announced it has opened the bid process for the 2019 Athletics World Championships.

The event, which the governing body claim will attract 1,300 athletes from over 100 countries, will be a vital qualification competition for the following year's Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

It will represent one of the final chances for competitors to seal their place at the Games in the Japanese capital.

IPC Athletics have set a deadline of September 1 for interested countries to submit a bid.

“The Para-Athletics World Championships is the world’s biggest single Para-sport event and has continually grown in size and scale each edition,” IPC summer sports director Ryan Montgomery said.

“The 2019 edition will take on extra significance as it is the last major international para-athletics event prior to Tokyo 2020, so we expect competition standards to be of an extremely high standard.

“The 2015 World Championships in Doha, Qatar, attracted the largest ever number of teams, athletes, broadcasters, media and commercial partners.

“We are hugely confident we will build on this success at our next World Championships in London in 2017.

“The event brings many benefits to the host city and we aim for the 2019 hosts to capitalise on the continued growth of the sport, especially in the year leading up to Tokyo 2020.”

The announcement follows the most recent edition of the IPC Athletics World Championships being held in Doha in October, which organisers declared the “best-ever”.

A total of 54 world records were broken during the 10 days of competition, eclipsing the 52 set at the 2013 event in Lyon in France.

China comfortably topped the medals table in Qatar’s capital, collating a total of 85 medals made up of 41 golds, 26 silvers and 18 bronzes.

Russia finished second with an overall haul of 69 medals, while the United States finished third with 39.

The event in Doha was screened worldwide and over 167 hours of action were broadcast.

The next IPC Athletics World Championships is due to held in 2017 at the Olympic Stadium in London from July 15 to 23.
