Home favourite Marielle Thompson claimed her third win in as many years at the International Ski Federation (FIS) Ski Cross World Cup in Nakiska to secure her third victory of the season.

Thompson took the lead out of the gates in the big final, skiing smoothly through the technical start section, followed closely by World Cup leader, Sweden's Anna Holmlund.

Austrians Andrea Limbacher and Katrin Ofner were battling for position behind them, but the pair touched skis out of a bank in the middle of the course, sending the latter into the fences and out of contention.

Thompson managed to maintain a slim lead over her rival, despite Holmlund’s best efforts to find more speed, and was able to cross the line first.

"I'm really stoked," said Thompson.

"When I came down after the semi-final I was just feeling so good about my skiing, I was having so much fun.

"And then in the final, anytime I'm in the gate with Anna I know it's going to be a tough one, so I just focused on really nailing those first few features and really working them to the best of my abilities to get in front."

Holmlund remains top of the overall World Cup standings on 670 points with France’s Alizee Baron second on 429 and Thompson third on 427.

In the men's big final, World Cup leader Jean-Frédéric Chapuis of France claimed his fourth win of the season in spectacular style with a last-ditch reach across the finish line.

Local hero Brady Leman took a lead out of the gate that looked as though it could be unassailable as Chapuis slipped back, and Switzerland’s Armin Niederer jockeyed for position behind with Germany’s Daniel Bohnacker.

Skiing smoothly, Leman appeared to be putting together the perfect race before a minor error in the course’s final section saw his speed drop.

It allowed both Chapuis and Niederer to slip past the Canadian in an incredible photo-finish that capped off one of the most dramatic big finals of the season.

"I made not such a good start, I was second and I tried a few times to pass Brady," said Chapuis.

"One time in the negative turn, but I was still stuck in second, and then in the last turn I made some speed to overtake him just at the line, between him and the final gate post.

"It was really close, but I was happy to win."

Chapuis’ tally of 570 points puts him 100 clear of Leman at the top of the World Cup standings, with another Canadian Christopher Del Bosco in third on 353.

The FIS Ski Cross World Cup is due to continue in Arosa, Switzerland, next month.

Qualification for both men and women is scheduled for February 5 with races taking place the following day.
