The United States’ Joshua Temple and Uzbekistan's Bektemir Melikuziev were the two most convincing winners on the opening day of the International Boxing Association (AIBA) World Championships here, registering TKO victories in their respective preliminary bouts.

Heavyweight Temple began his campaign with a serious statement of intent in the afternoon session, flooring Pakistan’s Mehmood Hussan twice before the contest was stopped at the end of the first round.

Meanwhile in the evening session, middleweight Melikuziev, the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games gold medallist who came into the event undefeated since joining the elite 75 kilogram class in January, took less than two minutes to knock-out Georgian veteran Zaal Kvachatadze.

The day began with victories for light flyweight Rogen Ladon of the Philippines and Tomoya Tsuboi of Japan against Argentina’s Leandro Blanc and Indonesia’s Cornelis Kwangu Langu respectively.

"I am very happy after the opening bout which is always hard in a big competition and especially in an AIBA World Boxing Championships," said Ladon, who is now scheduled to fight in front of legendary boxing compatriot Manny Pacquiao in Thursday’s (October 8) afternoon session.

"I was nervous but tried to keep focused until the final bell.”

In the battle of the future stars of AIBA competition, Uzbekistan’s Murodjon Akhmadaliev beat fellow young bantamweight Francesco Maietta of Italy, while Baku 2015 European Games gold medallist Lorenzo Sotomayor Collazo of Azerbaijan defeated Toronto 2015 Pan-American Games champion Arthur Biyarslanov of Canada in a hard-fought light welterweight contest.

Joining Sotomayor Collazo in the last-16 of his category is Great Britain’s Pat McCormack, who overcame Moldovan Dmitri Galagot.

There was also success for strongly-backed Algerian heavyweight Chouaib Bouloudinats as he ran out a comfortable victor against France’s Paul Omba Biongolo, while Thailand’s Chatchai Butdee beat Ukraine's Mykola Butsenko and will now face Denmark’s Frederik Lundgaard in the next round.

"I am satisfied with my performance but I hope to do better in the upcoming match," said Butdee.

"The difference between us was the tactic I used today with a lot of attacking."

A successful day for Azerbaijan was capped off when Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games gold medal-winning light flyweight Rufat Huseynov put his quick footwork to good use in getting the better of Imad Ahyoun of Morocco.

In one of the surprises of the day, Vanuatu’s Boe Warawara defeated Turkmenistan’s Yakub Meredov in the bantamweight class, delivering the country’s first-ever victory in the history of the World Championships.

Among the favourites for the middleweight title, Baku 2015 European Games champion Michael O’Reilly of Ireland won his contest against Ukraine’s Valerii Kharlamov.

Tomorrow’s action will see 44 preliminary bouts take place across two sessions, with the winners in the flyweight, lightweight, welterweight, light heavyweight and super heavyweight categories advancing to the last-16.

The Netherlands’ promising lightweight Enrico La Cruz is in top form and faces seasoned Italian Domenico Valentino in one of the most anticipated battles of day two.

Additionally, AIBA youth world champion Oleksandr Khyzhniak of Ukraine will tackle two-time Olympian Abdelhafid Benchabla of Algeria in the pick of the light heavyweight match-ups.
